COURSE DESCRIPTION
English 10 is a graduation requirement which follows the California State Framework and the California State and Redlands Unified School District Academic Standards. English 10 is a critical literature-based instructional program designed to develop student reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills.
This class is designed to help students develop their writing skills, evaluate various aspects of literature, and gain experience in writing short stories, biographical or autobiographical narratives, literature responses, expository composition (including analytical essays and research reports), persuasive compositions, business letters, and technical documents.
Students will refine their grammar and vocabulary skills in order to prepare for standardized testing and the California High School Exit Exam. Besides the reading of required class novels and plays, students will read one novel per quarter, on their own, outside of class. The following is a loose outline of literary works to be covered (and is subject to change at the teacher’s discretion):

Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes - Platinum Level (Prentice Hall) Novels and plays including (but not limited to) Antigone, The Good Earth, Farewell to Manzanar, and Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Please note: Books checked out by students during the year are the student’s responsibility.

GRADING
Tests, quizzes, finals, writing exercises and projects, group discussions, oral presentations, classroom participation and attendance, etc. will be graded. Student academic scores will be recorded on a computer grade-book program and posted periodically. Posted scores might not reflect the most current class scores. Most papers will be returned to the student. Students will be responsible for maintaining their own portfolios.

Quizzes / Tests: 20% 92-100 A 72-77 C
Writing / Essays (Major & In-class) / Projects: 25% 90-91 A- 70-71 C-
Vocabulary Quizzes: 15% 88-89 B+ 68-69 D+
Out of Class Reading / Journals / Participation 10% 82-87 B 62-67 D
Final Exam 10% 80-81 B 60-61 D-

ASSIGNMENTS
Short Essays and Homework will be assigned 2-4 times a week. Students will pass each weekly grammar or reading assessment or will retake the test during the office hours. Major assignments MUST be turned in on their due dates. NO excuses. NO exceptions.
MAKE-UP WORK
NO LATE WORK will be accepted with the exception of make-up work after an EXCUSED absence. The student is responsible for finding out what he or she has missed. Students must request to meet with me in order to take mandatory make-up tests and quizzes during the office period (7:30-8:00) on the block schedule following the student’s absence. The English Department at REV does not allow EXTRA CREDIT to replace missed assignments!
Note: Students excused for school sponsored activities/programs will be expected to complete their work on time. Understandably, your schedule is more demanding than others. There is therefore especially a need for you to be responsible and plan ahead.
LATE WORK
Daily class participation scores -- no credit given
Essays and other assessments (generally given on Monday or Friday) – up to 75% of earned score
BASIC CLASSROOM RULES
SUPPLIES
1st offense - critical verbal warning / 2nd offense - isolation and/or teacher conference and/or detention during the office hour / 3rd offense - parent/guardian phone conference / 4th offense - referral (backup system)
Nonparticipation is not an option in this class. Whining is prohibited. Electronic devices may be confiscated during class sessions at teacher discretion. If a student purposely switches his or her seat without permission, he or she will be marked tardy to class (ie, unprepared for class).
